Government commits to a Living Wage for Social Care workers

In its Programme for Government 2021-2026, Welsh Government has set out its intention to pay social care workers a real Living Wage.

Founded on the ‘distinctively Welsh values of community, equality and social justice’ the Programme aims to show how the Government will help NHS and care workers ‘recover and move forward’ following COVID 19.

In previous governments, social care has been the responsibility of individual ministers. Underlining the commitment, it is now the responsibility of the First Minister and the full Cabinet.

To support the Government’s commitment, the Social Care Fair Work Forum is looking at how the Living Wage might be implemented (for example, through a collective bargaining agreement) and learning from Scotland’s experience. We will be publishing updates on progress of the Social Care Forum and Welsh Government’s commitment.
